Chongqing

Chongqing is one of the four direct-administered municipalities of China, alongside Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin. Located in southwestern China, at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers, it is a vast and rapidly developing metropolis known for its mountainous terrain, misty atmosphere, and dynamic urban landscape. As of 2025, the municipality’s population is estimated at around 32 million, with about 9–10 million residing in the city’s urban core. Often referred to as the “Mountain City” and the “Fog City,” Chongqing is famous for its steep hills, tiered cityscape, and striking skyline built along winding rivers. Its unique geography has given rise to multi-level highways, bridges, and monorails that weave through skyscrapers — a scene often compared to something out of a futuristic movie. Economically, Chongqing is a major industrial, logistics, and commercial hub in western China. It plays a crucial role in the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the Belt and Road Initiative, serving as a gateway connecting China’s western regions with Southeast Asia and Europe. The city’s economy is driven by automobile manufacturing, electronics, shipbuilding, and chemical industries, while also growing rapidly in tech innovation and finance. Culturally, Chongqing has deep roots in Sichuan heritage, reflected in its dialect, festivals, and especially its world-famous spicy hotpot, a symbol of the city’s vibrant and bold character. The city also offers beautiful attractions such as the Hongya Cave, Three Gorges, Dazu Rock Carvings (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and scenic river cruises along the Yangtze River. Despite its industrial might, Chongqing maintains a strong focus on environmental sustainability and tourism, promoting its natural beauty, historic temples, and modern urban experiences.
