Macau, officially known as the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China, is a small but vibrant territory located on the southern coast of China, across the Pearl River Delta from Hong Kong. As of 2025, Macau has an estimated population of around 710,000 people, living within an area of about 33 square kilometers, making it one of the most densely populated regions in the world. Formerly a Portuguese colony for over 400 years, Macau was handed back to China in 1999 under the “one country, two systems” framework, which allows it to maintain its own legal, economic, and administrative systems distinct from mainland China. This colonial heritage has left a profound mark on the city’s culture, architecture, and cuisine, resulting in a fascinating blend of Chinese and Portuguese influences. Macau is often called the “Las Vegas of Asia” because of its world-renowned gaming and entertainment industry, which forms the backbone of its economy.
