Eastern Europe is a diverse region with a population of approximately 270 million people (including European Russia). The region uses a variety of currencies, such as the Russian ruble (RUB), Polish złoty (PLN), Romanian leu (RON), and the euro (EUR) in countries like Slovakia. Languages are mainly from the Slavic family (e.g. Russian, Polish, Serbian), but also include Hungarian (Uralic), Romanian (Romance), and Albanian (an Indo-European isolate). Several countries are multilingual, reflecting their complex ethnic and historical backgrounds.
